How To Order a Sweater Mend
Sweater mends restore warmth and character to knitwear. We use design motifs to reinforce or highlight the repair, perfect for cashmere or wool.
1
Count and Size Your Holes
Knitwear repairs are based on both the number and size of holes. Each hole is measured, and we apply a proportional design mend.
• For a ¼-inch hole → 1 design motif (rose, stars)
• For a ½-inch hole → 3 design motifs (clustered for coverage) or barbed wirelettes.
For holes larger than ½ inch, we stabilize the knit with underlay yarn or fabric and apply multiple motifs or a woven darn.
Count every visible hole. Tiny pinholes that don’t destabilize stitches may be reinforced with thread only, not motifs.
PRO TIP: The easiest way to see the holes is to lift the sweater up into the light. It will show every hole.
2
Estimate the Number of Repairs
We work in units of 25 and then in additions of 10 or so depending on garment,
A. Enter # of ¼-inch hole → ________ X 1 =
B. Enter # of ½-inch hole → ________ x 3 =
Equals:
C: A Total + B Total
Voila. We are all mathletes here.
3
Choose Your Design Motifs
We use embroidery motifs to both reinforce and decorate.
Options:
- Roses
- Stars
- Barbed Wirelettes
Each motif is stitched using wool, cotton, linen or silk thread depending on the sweater fiber.
FAQs
How do I count tiny pinholes?
If the weave is intact, we reinforce without motifs. Count only those needing embroidered coverage.
What if holes are larger than ½ inch or I have more than 50?
This is a Custom Job. Please order a custom mend and we'll take it from there.
