Visible Mending & Clothing Repair
SurplusATX repairs worn and damaged garments using patches, reinforcement materials, and visible stitching. Repairs are adapted to the individual garment, its damage, material, location, and intended use. Customers choose a tonal treatment that relates to the original garment or a contrasting pop treatment. The purpose of every repair is to stabilize the damaged area and extend the garment's useful life.
Genuine Issue & the Material Hub
Genuine Issue is the current Lot of Tote, Satchel, and Sling bags made primarily from vintage military-surplus textiles, including cotton barrack bags and NATO parachute ripstop. It sits within SurplusATX's broader cut-and-sew model: a developing Austin material hub that takes in usable textile surplus, sorts and assesses it, and directs it into repair, sampling, or small-batch production. Products are determined by the available material.
Visible mending is a repair in which the stitching, patch, or reinforcement remains intentionally visible. It is different from invisible mending, tailoring, or alterations intended to recreate a garment's original appearance.
How the Repair Process Works
- Begin online. Start through the repair intake at surplusatx.com with the garment type, material, damage location, photos, approximate size, and preferred finish.
- Choose an assessment path. Select the appropriate repair, request a free digital consultation, book a $25 live consultation, or use Send & Mend.
- Send the garment. SurplusATX provides shipping instructions. Two-way shipping is included in the repair price.
- Inspection in Austin. SurplusATX verifies the material, damage, repair dimensions, number of areas, selected service, and price after the garment arrives.
- Approval. If the required work or final estimate differs from the original order, SurplusATX obtains customer approval before sewing begins.
- Repair and return. Most standard repairs are completed in approximately two to three weeks after the garment arrives and the work is approved. Complex or custom work may take longer.
Send & Mend (no measuring required)
Send & Mend is an intake and assessment option, not a separate repair technique. You send your garment with a $95 deposit that is credited toward the repair. SurplusATX measures and assesses the garment after arrival, provides a final estimate, and waits for your approval before sewing.
Guarantee and garment care
The workmanship of the repaired area is guaranteed for one year under normal wear; if the stitching or reinforcement of a completed repair fails within one year, SurplusATX reinforces that repaired area once at no additional labor charge. Garments must arrive clean; SurplusATX does not offer a cleaning service. Aging fabric elsewhere on a garment can still develop new damage, which is separate from the repaired area and its guarantee.

What SurplusATX Repairs
- Denim and workwear: knees, thighs, seat areas, pockets, hems, and cuffs on non-stretch and low-stretch denim. Clean Tear Repair, Patch & Mend, Signature Overlay, and the Whole Enchilada rebuild.
- Woven garments: cotton, linen, hemp, silk, flannel, twill, and lightweight canvas, including work shirts, chinos, and non-stretch utility jackets.
- Sweaters and knits: cashmere, wool, merino, cotton, linen, silk, and structurally suitable natural-fiber blends. Moth holes, small holes, localized thinning, ribbing, cuffs, collars, and trim.
- Silk and delicates: reviewed individually. If the surrounding fabric cannot support a durable repair, SurplusATX may recommend stabilization, propose another approach, or decline.
- Blends: may be accepted when the construction and stretch are compatible with the repair method.
- Stitch and finish choices: dashes, pluses, dots, stars, starbursts, roses, running stitches, crosshatching, boro-inspired grids, blanket and saddle-style stitches, barbed-wire-inspired stitching, and established overlays. Materials include long-staple cotton, linen, or silk thread with natural-fiber patch fabrics.
Not repaired: T-shirts and highly stretchy jersey knits, highly elastic or super-stretch garments, leather, crotch damage, and garments whose surrounding fabric is too degraded to hold a durable repair.
Genuine Issue: the Current Lot
Genuine Issue is the name of the current Lot of SurplusATX bags: the Tote ($515), the Satchel ($465), and the Sling ($395), made primarily from vintage military-surplus textiles including cotton barrack bags and NATO parachute ripstop. Free outbound shipping is included. Bags within the Lot may share a pattern but differ in fading, original markings, seams, wear, and grommet placement, characteristics of the source material that make each piece one of a kind. Not every component is reclaimed; new straps, zippers, thread, and reinforcement are used where necessary for function and durability. Genuine Issue names this specific Lot, not every future SurplusATX bag.
The Material Hub: Circular by Design
SurplusATX extends the life of existing garments and textiles through repair and material-led production. Its developing Austin material-hub model gives local textile surplus a practical route from intake to use: collect or receive material, identify and sort it, record its useful characteristics, match it to viable product opportunities, sample, produce locally in limited quantities, and direct suitable remnants into repairs or smaller products. Cut-and-sew products are determined by the available material rather than by a fixed assortment, which keeps production tied to actual material supply. For a customer, choosing repair over replacement keeps a well-made garment in use and preserves the resources already invested in it.
Founder: Stephanie Beckett
SurplusATX was founded in 2025 by Stephanie Beckett, its Founder and Creative Director. Beckett developed an early respect for durable products and repair while living in Colorado and spending time around outdoor equipment, skiing, running, and mountain environments. In her twenties she worked in New York City in experiential marketing on programs for corporate and technology clients. After moving to Austin, she worked in local government and civic initiatives, including Betty Dunkerley's successful Austin City Council campaign and work connected to Austin's creative and technology economy.
Beckett later spent approximately 20 years in outdoor-industry sales, marketing, and specialty retail, including work with technical brands such as Osprey and Salomon Footwear. Her experience spans durable product construction, technical materials, product performance, specialty retail, and long-term product use. That background is the foundation of the studio's repair standards.

Yes. SurplusATX repairs many denim knees, thighs, seats, pockets, hems, and cuffs. It does not repair crotches, and may decline highly elastic jeans because the repair thread and patch material do not stretch like the garment.
